Don’t become apathetic about winter storms that will clobber the U.P. this week
Remember the 2017 U.P. Winter has been a Friend and a Deceptive Serial Killer
Some cops in the U.P. today are practicing their secrecy system – private channels so public won’t learn what is happening

(For those who did not know, during my second time at TV-6 – I was a roommate with Karl Bohnak – he and I joined about same time in 1988 and I believe Karl truly understands U.P. weather – and his winter storm warnings were even backed up by Al Roker this morning)
(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – Repeat 2017 winter storms have already proved deadly in the U.P. – so even tough Yoopers need to take heed this week despite today’s milder temps.
It’s almost not news to put out winter storm warnings – however the weather has proved deadly in the past three weeks.
It’s easy to become apathetic until you think of the unbearable price some families have paid in 2017 across the U.P.
“Private call” training is underway in some areas of the U.P. as officials try to limit public information getting out – We would not have to listen to the scanner (if only) if the officials did due diligence in news releases – but we have discovered even many deaths are hidden except for funeral home notices.
You see, folks like UPSET, the feds and others have private channels for a reason – today’s stuff is just about treating you like a mushroom. There is no reason to scramble or go to private groups other than prevent release of information. Period. Instead of addressing real issues – they have decided it is easier not hide info. Not sure who is behind this but have heard it numerous times on scanner today – warning dispatchers the secrecy system was being tested.
Having said that some U.P. law enforcement jurisdictions are better than others – more modern thinking.
So scanners listeners please keep us informed as instead of dealing with real issues they are getting secretive. Did you notice none of the TV stations bothered to go to that Copper Country accident – guess it was not important enough.
Be careful if you live in one of the old mining-era homes that have been proven to be death traps – and do practice drills to get kids and everyone out – remember old homes and old wiring – is likely behind most of the blazes in which five people died in U.P. fatal fires since Dec. 19, 2016. Remember who Jesus hung with – so if you are Christian or religious (or claim to be) do something to help someone this winter – kindness counts. Yoopers can be generous – but just as judgmental.
There have also been two car vs train crashes that can be chalked up to winter driving – and several fatal car accidents during storms. U.P. Breaking News estimates well over over 200 rollovers this winter and much more than 300 U.P. vehicles slam into snowbanks.
The erratic weather – most recently – has proven good for U.P. snowmobiling but trails will likely be impacted by both the warming today and the winter blasts to come. Please slow down and live.
None of the drivers involved in any of those accidents expected to get in a wreck and were confident they could handle the winter driving.
Thank God that family properly put that boy in the child seat – the only one to survive the Copper Country accident without physical injuries – mentally – well we just pray for the child and his loving father as they cope with the tragedy.
